Protection for ancient trees

Ancient woodland, ancient and veteran trees now have wholly exceptional protection.

It is stated in the revised government National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) thus: from now on loss or damage to ancient habitats should only be considered in ‘wholly exceptional’ circumstances’.

For the first time the NPPF puts the protection of ancient woodland and ancient and veteran trees in England on a par with the best of our built heritage. Visit the Woodland Trust blog for the full story: ttp://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2018/07/better-protection-for-ancient-woods-and-trees/

To fully understand what this protection is and how it might be implemented the revised NPPF needs to be read as a whole. Victoria Bankes Price, Planning Advisor to the Woodland Trust has done just this and on 31 July 2018 examined the implications in this post: http://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2018/07/nppf-impact/
